uPVC Door Not Locking Properly?

Runcorn Locksmith repairs and replaces uPVC and composite door locks across Runcorn, from failed multipoint mechanisms and worn cylinders to doors that have sagged out of line with the frame. Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The first thing to know: you probably do not need a new door, and often not even a whole new lock. Whether the handle lifts but the door won't lock, the handle has gone floppy, or the key turns and nothing opens, the cause is usually one worn part inside the door. Please don't force a stiff key or handle in the meantime; extra pressure strains the mechanism and can turn a small fix into a bigger one. Other door types are covered under lock repair.

What Is Your uPVC Door Actually Doing?

On a uPVC door, the symptom you describe nearly always points to the part that has given up. That lets us narrow down the fault and give you a more accurate price before anyone sets off.

01

The handle lifts but the door will not lock

This is the fault we hear about most. Often the cam inside the gearbox has sheared, so lifting the handle no longer drives the hooks and bolts. Sometimes the locking points are simply missing the keeps because the door has moved. We check the door and the lock together and find out which it is before replacing anything. More detail in why a uPVC door will not lock.

02

The handle has dropped or feels floppy

A loose handle can be nothing more than tired fixings or a worn spindle, but a handle that hangs limp usually means the gearbox has failed internally. The door can still be locked, because the hooks may stay engaged. It often follows weeks of the handle getting stiffer. We check handle and mechanism together before deciding on the repair.

03

The key turns but the door will not open

A key that turns freely does not prove the lock is working. A broken spring in the gearbox can stop the bolt retracting, or a worn cylinder cam may not be driving the mechanism at all. The latch can also be at fault. If you feel strong resistance, stop: more force adds strain. See why a uPVC door will not open.

04

The door is locked shut and will not open at all

Usually a seized gearbox or a hook jammed hard against its keep, sometimes made worse by poor alignment loading the locking points. Call rather than force it: forcing a jammed multipoint tends to turn a gearbox job into a full mechanism replacement. We judge the opening method on the fault and the door's condition, aiming to avoid needless damage. Urgent help: request an emergency locksmith, or.

05

You have to lift and shove to get it to lock

That is alignment, not the lock, at least to begin with. The door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has shifted, so the hooks no longer meet the keeps cleanly. Each forced lift loads the gearbox, and this is the habit that eventually breaks it. Adjusting the door now costs far less than replacing the mechanism later.

06

The key will not turn from outside

This usually points to a worn or damaged key or euro cylinder, especially if the door still locks from inside. Pressure from a misaligned door or a tight mechanism can also make the key bind, so don't force it. We confirm the cause before recommending anything. A cylinder is the cheapest part to change, and a good moment to consider an anti-snap upgrade.

The Three Parts That Fail on a uPVC Door

What most people call "the lock" on a uPVC door is really three separate things, and the cost of putting each one right is very different. Before suggesting an adjustment, a repair or a replacement part, we look at the cylinder, the gearbox, the locking strip and the way the door sits in the frame.

01

The euro cylinder

This is the key-operated barrel. It works alongside the central gearbox but can often be changed on its own, and it is the quickest and cheapest part on the door to replace. It wears, gets forced, or fails after a key snaps inside it. Size matters: a replacement has to fit the door and suit the existing lock and protective hardware, and a cylinder that sticks out past the handle plate is itself a weak point. Price depends on the size and the security rating chosen, and we explain the options and their prices before anything is fitted. Related: lock replacement and anti-snap locks explained.

02

The multipoint gearbox

The gearbox sits behind the handle and turns the movement of your key and handle into the hooks, rollers or bolts travelling up and down the multipoint strip on the door's edge. When it fails, the door may refuse to lock or to unlock. Whether it can be swapped on its own, without a whole new strip, depends on compatibility and on the state of the rest of the mechanism, and that in turn shapes the price: a full strip means different parts and more fitting work, and part availability plays a role too. For background, see common uPVC lock mechanism problems.

03

The door alignment

Alignment is not part of the lock, yet it decides how the locking points meet the keeps in the frame, and it lies behind a large share of lock failures. As a door settles on its hinges, the hooks catch and the strain passes into the gearbox, making the key or handle hard work. A door can need adjusting well before the mechanism has actually failed, and catching it early is the cheapest fix there is. The cost depends on what is causing it and how much adjustment is needed.

You Usually Do Not Need a Whole New Mechanism

When a multipoint lock stops working, the failure is normally inside the central gearbox, not along the full-height strip. If the strip, hooks and bolts are still serviceable, a compatible gearbox can often be fitted on its own, which is a noticeably smaller job than replacing the whole mechanism. Sometimes that gearbox is the only thing stopping the lock from working at all.

There are honest exceptions. A full strip replacement is the right answer after physical damage from a forced entry, where corrosion has set in, or where the system is obsolete and a matching gearbox is no longer made. Gearboxes also come in a number of UK families and backset sizes, so identifying the exact one on the door is what decides whether it can be done on the same visit. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: evidence items 17 and 18, parts stocked, before any stock claim is made.] Where a part is needed, the lock replacement page explains how we choose it.

And You Almost Certainly Do Not Need a New Door

Plenty of people with a failed uPVC door phone the company that fitted it, or start pricing a replacement. But a failed gearbox, a worn cylinder and a door that has dropped on its hinges are lock and hardware faults, and often only one part of the system needs attention. Which repair suits depends on the fault, on whether the parts are compatible and on the condition of the rest of the mechanism. Window companies fit doors; locksmiths fix locks. A locksmith can put these faults right for a fraction of what a new door costs. Start with our lock repair service.

Upgrading the Cylinder While We Are There

The euro cylinder, the part you put your key into, can usually be changed without touching the gearbox or the full multipoint mechanism. It may need replacing because it is damaged, unreliable or the wrong length for the door, and some customers simply want a recognised security-rated option while the work is being done. Options may include TS 007 three-star and SS 312 Diamond-rated cylinders. Any replacement must still be the correct size for the door. A few things worth knowing:

01

Check your own cylinder now.

Look at the face of the cylinder, around the keyhole, for a star rating or a Diamond mark.

02

Insurance.

Some policies specify a particular lock standard, so check your own policy wording.

03

Your choice.

It is a recommendation, not a requirement. If you prefer a standard cylinder replaced like for like, that is what we fit.

Once we have looked at the cylinder, lock and door, we explain what is available. See anti-snap locks and lock snapping explained, or our lock installation service for new locks.

Composite Doors Too

Many composite doors use the same kind of euro cylinder and multipoint mechanism as uPVC, so the faults to the key, handle or locking points, and the effects of poor alignment, are much the same. The slab is denser and hardware sizes vary more, so we assess the construction and fitted parts before recommending a compatible repair. We cover both. More on parts: lock replacement.

What Does a uPVC Door Lock Repair Cost?

No single fixed price covers every uPVC door lock repair, because the fault might need an adjustment, a repair or a replacement component. A cylinder swap is usually the cheapest outcome, a full mechanism replacement the most expensive, and a gearbox-only repair sits between the two. What moves the price:

  1. Which part has actually failed.
  2. Whether the gearbox can be replaced alone or the full strip is needed.
  3. Whether you choose to upgrade the cylinder.
  4. Whether the door also needs realigning.
  5. The time of day: evenings after 6pm, nights, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays are charged at a higher labour rate.

There is no call-out charge at any hour. You get a price on the call from what you describe, and if something on site changes it, you hear why before work begins; the repair starts only once you have agreed it. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a uPVC starting price, VAT-inclusive and scoped to this job, can be published.]

We cover uPVC and compatible composite doors, assess the lock and the door's alignment together, and explain repair and replacement options before you decide. Call Runcorn Locksmith on 01928 611001 for your price.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

How the Job Works

  1. Tell us on the phone what the door does when you use the key and handle, or send a photo of the door edge, the handle and the lock face. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether photos can be received, and on which channel.]
  2. We work out the likely fault and give you a price.
  3. A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence] confirms the fault on site, identifies the exact mechanism and talks you through the options before fitting anything.
  4. The repair is completed, the door is tested locking and unlocking from both sides, and the alignment is checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

My uPVC door handle has dropped and will not lift. What is wrong?

Almost always the multipoint gearbox. Once it fails internally, the handle loses its grip on the mechanism and drops. The door may still be locked, because the hooks and bolts can stay engaged, but the mechanism is no longer working. Tired fixings or a worn spindle are the other possibilities, which is why we check both.

Do I need a whole new mechanism or just the gearbox?

Usually just the gearbox. If the remaining multipoint strip is still serviceable, a compatible gearbox can be fitted on its own. The existing gearbox has to be identified first to confirm compatibility and part availability. A full mechanism is needed after forced-entry damage, corrosion, or where the gearbox is no longer made.

Does a broken uPVC lock mean I need a new door?

Not necessarily. A lock fault on its own does not show that a new door is needed; it may be solved by adjusting the door or replacing one lock component. Whether a door ever needs replacing comes down to its overall condition, not the lock.

Why do I have to lift and shove the handle to lock my door?

The door has dropped or the frame has moved, so the hooks are no longer meeting the keeps cleanly. At first it is an alignment problem rather than a lock problem. Every forced lift strains the gearbox, so get it adjusted before it fails.

How long does a uPVC lock repair take?

A cylinder swap is the quickest job on the door; a gearbox or full mechanism replacement takes longer, depending on the door and the system fitted. [PROVIDER PACK: typical job durations for cylinder, gearbox, full mechanism and alignment work.]

How long should a uPVC door lock last?

Industry guidance commonly puts a multipoint gearbox at roughly eight to fifteen years, but it depends heavily on how often the door is used and whether the alignment has stayed correct. A door that has been out of line for a long time wears its gearbox out faster.

Can you get me in if the door is locked shut and will not open?

Yes. A uPVC door that is locked shut is usually a seized gearbox or a jammed hook rather than a cylinder fault, and the opening method is chosen to release the mechanism while limiting avoidable damage to the door. Please call before forcing it. Emergency calls are answered around the clock, every day.

Should I use WD40 on a stiff uPVC lock?

Not as a lubricant. WD40 cleans and displaces water rather than lubricating for the long term, and it can draw dirt into the mechanism over time. A dry graphite or silicone lubricant is the better choice. If the handle is still stiff afterwards, the cause is more likely alignment or a worn gearbox, so call us.
