Been Broken Into? Here Is What Matters First
If there is any chance someone is still inside, or the building looks unsafe, stay outside and ring 999. Do not go in to check.
Once you are sure it is safe, contact the police before anyone else, us included: Cheshire Constabulary on 101, or online at https://www.cheshire.police.uk. After that, we repair the damage and lock the property up again, day or night. You can ring us for advice before the police have finished, so you know what comes next. For other urgent jobs, see our emergency locksmith service.
Before You Touch Anything
Straight after a break-in, most people want to tidy up and work out what has gone. It is worth holding off. Forensic traces are easiest to recover in the first few hours, and ordinary handling wipes them out. Rather than a vague "don't touch anything", here is what actually matters:
- Leave the entry point alone: the forced door, the broken window and the frame around them.
- Do not pick up anything the intruder may have dropped.
- Keep clear of glass and debris near where they got in.
- Avoid using the bathroom; intruders sometimes do, and evidence can be left there.
- Do not handle drawers, handles or surfaces that have clearly been disturbed.
- Take photographs from a distance rather than close up.
Pictures of the entry point and of each room that was affected help the police and your insurance claim alike. There is more detail in the full guide to what to do after a burglary.
When Can You Actually Secure the Property?
You are probably caught between two pressures right now. The police want the scene left as it is. Your insurer will not want the property left open. And a home that has been broken into once can be targeted again, because intruders sometimes come back for things they could not carry the first time.
The way through is to ask the police directly: when can the entry point be worked on, and is anyone coming to take forensic evidence? Ask them when they expect to attend. If that is soon, waiting makes sense. If nobody can come until tomorrow, a door or window should not stay open overnight, and getting the property secured is the right decision. Most insurers expect to be told promptly, so check your policy wording as well.
One thing rarely mentioned: a locksmith repairing a door has to handle it, and with or without gloves that can disturb marks around the entry point. That is the reason to ask the police first rather than guess either way. When the time is right, our burglary repairs and emergency burglary repairs cover the rest.
What We Repair After a Break-In
When someone forces their way in, the damage rarely stops at the lock; the door and the hardware around it often take the strain too. Below is what typically needs attention and how we deal with it, all set out in more depth across all our locksmith services.
Doors and door frames
Forced doors usually show damage at the keep, the strike plate, the door edge or the frame beside the lock. Fixing the lock alone leaves that weak point in place. If the frame cannot be put right on the same visit, we secure it temporarily first; heavy joinery or structural work may need a carpenter or door specialist.
Locks and cylinders
Snapped cylinders, drilled locks and damaged mortice cases are replaced with an equivalent or an upgraded lock, depending on the door and anything your policy asks for. Where keys to the property were stolen, the affected locks may need changing so those keys stop working, damaged or not.
uPVC and composite door mechanisms
Forcing a uPVC door often damages the multipoint mechanism as well as the cylinder, even where the door looks fine and still shuts. Closing is not proof it is sound. Our page on uPVC door lock repair covers these mechanisms in full.
Windows and window locks
Forced sashes, broken handles and damaged locking mechanisms are our side of the job. If the glass itself is broken or a sealed glazing unit is damaged, a glazier is the right trade, and we will tell you so plainly.
Boarding up where needed
Where a door, window or pane cannot be permanently repaired straight away, temporary boarding closes the opening so the property is secure in the meantime. Follow-up work is then arranged once the entrance is safe. Boarding up is covered fully on its own service page.
Secure Tonight, Repaired Properly Afterwards
Many people worry that everything has to be sorted tonight, and priced as if it were. It does not. These jobs normally happen in two stages. Some damaged entrances can be fully repaired on the first visit. Others are made safe to leave and sleep behind, using a temporary lock, a replacement component or boarding, while compatible parts are found or separate glazing, door or frame work is booked. Our emergency boarding up service handles the openings that cannot be closed any other way.
The permanent repair follows once the police are finished, your insurer knows, and any parts have arrived, whether that means a repair or a full lock replacement. Before either stage we tell you which one you are at and what it involves. Any extra repair, part or return visit is discussed on its own, and the work and price are agreed before the next stage starts.
Paperwork for Your Insurance Claim
Insurance requirements differ from one policy to the next. Read your policy, contact your insurer promptly and ask exactly what evidence they need. Cheshire Constabulary recorded 132 burglaries mapped to Runcorn over a year (September 2025 to August 2026, data.police.uk), and the paperwork after each one starts in the same place. Most insurers will want to see:
- the crime reference number the police give you
- photographs taken in line with police guidance, plus any correspondence from your insurer
- invoices for both the temporary securing and the finished repairs
We provide an itemised invoice describing the damage, the work done and any locks fitted, including the standard they meet. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: that an itemised invoice naming the work and the lock standard can be provided as standard.] Keep it alongside your crime reference and your photographs. If your insurer requests particular information about the damage, repair or locks fitted, tell us before work begins. Your insurer will decide what the policy covers. For more on picking a tradesperson at a time like this, read how to choose a trustworthy locksmith.
Upgrading Security After a Break-In
This is something to think about when you are ready, not tonight. A break-in shows how well each part of the entrance held up, and the lock, cylinder, keeps and frame can all be affected at once. Looking at the whole entrance tells you whether one part is enough or whether neighbouring hardware also needs work. A larger upgrade is not automatically needed, and we will fit like for like if you prefer. Some of it may be covered by your claim.
Where a timber door was forced, suitable doors may take a qualifying lock certified to BS 3621, which some policies specify. Where a uPVC or composite door cylinder was snapped, euro cylinders and matching hardware may carry TS 007 ratings, and qualifying cylinders may carry SS 312 Diamond certification. These ratings apply to particular products or combinations of hardware; they do not certify the whole door or guarantee you meet every policy. Also weigh up any written requirement from your insurer, landlord or managing agent, and ask them to confirm a required specification in writing before choosing a lock for that reason. Our guide to BS 3621 door locks explains the standard.

What Do Burglary Repairs Cost?
We do not publish a set figure for burglary repairs, because they vary too much: the cost depends on the damage, which entrance is affected and whether the job needs immediate work, follow-up work or both. The final price can only be confirmed once the door, lock or window hardware has been looked at. The main factors are:
- the kind of damage and how far it goes
- whether the entrance can be repaired or has to be temporarily secured first
- which locks, cylinders or other parts are needed, and to what standard
- whether compatible parts have to be sourced, and the time of day you call
There is no call-out charge at any hour, and you hear the price on the call; if something on site changes it, you are told before work begins. Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. If you are claiming, we can set the price out so it is simple to submit. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a starting price for burglary repairs can be published, and whether claim-friendly itemised invoicing is offered.] Our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn has more.

Burglary Repairs Across Runcorn
We attend break-in repairs for homeowners, tenants, landlords and business premises across Runcorn.
A property cannot sensibly be left open overnight, so the aim is to reach you and make it secure the same night wherever you are in WA7: Higher Runcorn, Halton Lea, Grange, Dukesfield, Halton Brook and The Brow. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas] The town had around 61,600 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS, built-up area), and the homes vary from street to street. Higher Runcorn, Grange, Halton Brook and The Brow are mostly houses, so the repair is usually to your own front or back door; around Dukesfield there is much private renting, so tenants should let their landlord or agent know alongside us.
Wherever you are, the advice while you wait is the same. Tell us what was damaged and what the police have advised. Keep your hands off the forced door, damaged lock, broken window and surrounding frame, and avoid unnecessary movement near the entrance, broken glass or debris. Do not clean, move things or touch the entry point until the police tell you what can be handled, and ask them when temporary securing or repair work may begin. We are available 24 hours and charge no call-out fee.
