Key Snapped in Your Lock? Do Not Touch It Yet
Runcorn Locksmith removes snapped keys from locks across Runcorn, day or night, with no call-out charge. In most cases the lock itself is undamaged, and the broken piece can be taken out without replacing anything.
So leave it alone and call. Poking at the fragment can drive it deeper or damage the lock, and glue or a paperclip can make it far harder to reach, which narrows the options. Much of the harm on these jobs happens in the few minutes before anyone rings. If something has already been tried, just tell us when you call. For any lock emergency, see emergency locksmith.
What Not to Do With a Snapped Key
What happens in the next few minutes affects how the key can be removed. Stop testing the lock, keep anything out of the keyway, and don't force the handle. Hold on to the half that came away, as it can help identify the key and show how it broke. These are the five things people most often try, and what each one does:
Superglue on the broken end.
Glue gets into the keyway and can bond the fragment to the pins inside, which often turns a simple extraction into a new cylinder.
Hairpins, paperclips or thin screwdrivers.
They tend to push the fragment further in, where it is much harder to reach.
Pliers or tweezers on a flush break.
With nothing to grip, the attempt mostly scratches and scores the keyway.
Drilling.
It destroys the cylinder, which was probably the one part that was fine.
Pushing the other half back in to turn the lock.
It drives the fragment deeper and can jam the pins.
The one safe exception: if a piece is clearly sticking out and can be gripped without force, a gentle pull with tweezers sometimes works. If it does not come away first time, stop and call. If a cylinder does end up needing replacement, see lock replacement.
Why Keys Snap in the First Place
A snapped key is rarely a bolt from the blue. Usually it is the end of something that has been building for weeks: a key can break for several reasons, and the break itself doesn't tell you which. The usual culprits:
A lock that had been getting stiffer
until one turn was forced too hard. Worn, stiff or damaged parts inside make every turn harder.
A worn key
thinned and weakened by years of use, bending or old damage.
A badly cut duplicate
which can be weaker than the original key.
Door alignment or cold weather
both of which add strain: a door that doesn't meet the frame cleanly loads the lock and key, and cold can stiffen a marginal mechanism enough to tip it over.
That matters because, if the lock was stiff before the key snapped, removing the fragment will not cure the fault behind it, and the next key will eventually go the same way. The key, lock and door may need checking together, and if that is what we find, we will tell you. The underlying fault is covered on our lock repair page.
Your Lock Is Probably Fine
This is where most people overestimate the cost. A snapped key does not usually mean a new lock. In most cases the cylinder is undamaged, the extraction is a short job with the right tools, and the lock carries on working with your remaining keys.
There are realistic exceptions. A fragment that has been forced deep into the keyway is harder to recover; a cylinder worn enough to cause the break may not be worth keeping; and damage from an earlier DIY attempt can rule out a simple extraction. Where any of those apply, you hear about it before anything changes. Otherwise, it is usually the key that needs sorting, not the lock. Call us first.
Locks We Extract Broken Keys From
The method depends on the type of lock, which is why we ask what kind of door or fitting it is when you call:
- Euro cylinders on uPVC and composite doors (more on uPVC door locks)
- Mortice locks on timber doors
- Nightlatch rim cylinders
- Padlocks on gates, sheds and outbuildings
- Window locking handles (see window locks)
If yours is not on the list, describe it on the call and we will tell you what we can do.
When the Lock Does Need Replacing
Sometimes replacement genuinely is the right answer. The fragment may be out of reach, leaving drilling as the only way in; the cylinder may already have been worn or damaged before the break; a glue or tool attempt may have harmed the internal mechanism; or you may now be short of working keys and prefer to retire the whole set rather than depend on one. In that last case, what we offer is a new cylinder with a fresh set of keys. Whatever the reason, you are told why replacement is needed and given the price before any work starts. More on choosing a cylinder: lock replacement.

What Does Broken Key Removal Cost in Runcorn?
There is no single set figure for removing a snapped key, because jobs vary. A clean extraction from an undamaged cylinder is the cheapest outcome; a cylinder replacement afterwards is the most expensive. The things that move the price:
- How the key broke, and whether any of it is sticking out.
- The lock type.
- Whether an earlier attempt, such as glue or a tool, has complicated the job.
- Whether the cylinder needs replacing afterwards, and the time of day: evenings after 6pm, nights, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays are charged at a higher labour rate.
There is no call-out charge at any hour. You get a price on the call from what you tell us, and if anything on site changes it, you are told before work begins. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether an extraction starting price, VAT-inclusive and scoped to this job, can be published.]

What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
What Happens When You Call
A snapped key calls for clear advice before anyone touches the lock, so the call itself is part of the job:
- Tell us which lock the key has broken in, whether any of it is visible, and whether anything has already been tried.
- We give you a price and an arrival estimate [PROVIDER PACK: honest arrival range for Runcorn].
- A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS check evidence] removes the broken piece and checks that the lock still works properly afterwards.
- If the cylinder turns out to be damaged, you are told before anything is replaced.
Asking what has been tried is deliberate: a glued fragment is a very different job from a clean break, and knowing in advance changes both the quote and what the technician brings. You can call at any hour whenever a broken key stops you getting in or leaves a door unsecured. Prefer to write? Contact us.

Broken Key Removal Across Runcorn
We attend snapped key call-outs for homeowners, tenants, landlords and business premises across Runcorn.
A key broken in a front door usually means the property can't be locked, so these jobs are attended rather than booked for later, and calls are taken around the clock. Has your key snapped inside a lock? Leave the broken piece where it is and don't force anything; a snapped key does not automatically mean a new lock, and replacement only comes up when it is genuinely necessary. Whatever we find, the work and the final price are confirmed before we start.
We cover the WA7 postcode district (ONSPD Feb 2026, 1,495 live postcodes in the Runcorn built-up area), a town of around 61,600 usual residents at the 2021 Census, about 30 people per hectare (ONS, Runcorn built-up area). That takes in Higher Runcorn, Halton Lea, Grange, Dukesfield, Halton Brook and The Brow. Higher Runcorn, Grange, Halton Brook and The Brow are mostly houses, so the snapped key is usually in a family's own front or back door; Dukesfield has a lot of private renting, so tenants should let their landlord or agent know as well as calling us (Census 2021, indicative). [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas.] Not sure we reach your street? Call and ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I need a new lock if my key has snapped?
Usually not. In most cases the cylinder is undamaged and the broken piece can be removed, leaving the same lock working with your other keys. Whether that is possible depends on the lock, where the fragment sits and whether the keyway or other parts are damaged, so the lock is inspected before the method is confirmed.
I tried to superglue the two halves together. Have I made it worse?
Possibly, so do tell us when you call. Glue can bond the broken piece to the pins inside, which can turn a straightforward extraction into a cylinder replacement. From here on, don't put glue, another key or any improvised tool into the keyway; each can push the fragment further in or make it harder to remove.
How long does it take to remove a broken key?
A clean break in an undamaged cylinder is usually a short job once the technician is on site. It takes longer where the fragment has been pushed deep, where glue or a tool has already been used, or where the cylinder needs replacing. [PROVIDER PACK: typical extraction times.]
Can I get it out myself with pliers or tweezers?
Only if part of the key is clearly sticking out and can be gripped without force. If it slides out easily, fine. If it doesn't move first time, stop: repeated attempts do most of the damage on these jobs.
Why did my key snap in the first place?
Rarely by pure accident. Most snapped keys follow a lock that had been getting stiffer for weeks or months, a key worn thin by years of use, or a poorly cut duplicate. Cold weather can tip a marginal lock over the edge. If the lock was stiff, it needs looking at too.
Do you come out at night for a snapped key?
Yes. Snapped key calls are covered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. A key broken in a front door usually leaves the property unsecured, so it is treated as urgent. Out-of-hours work is charged at a higher labour rate, but there is still no call-out charge.
The key snapped and half of it is still in my hand. Does that help?
Yes. Keep it rather than throwing it away, mention it on the call and have it ready when we arrive, because it shows the key profile, the lock type and roughly how the break happened. Meanwhile, stop using the lock.
What does it cost to have a broken key removed in Runcorn?
It depends on how the key broke, whether any of it is sticking out, the lock type, whether anything has already been tried, and the time of day. A clean extraction from an undamaged cylinder is the least expensive outcome. There is no call-out charge, and you get the price on the call before any work starts.
