A Locksmith for Your Home
Shut out of the house, worried about who still has a key, or tired of a back door that never feels secure? Runcorn Locksmith is a residential locksmith working on homes across Runcorn, from a lockout at three in the morning to a booked lock change or a security upgrade. Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day, and there is no call-out charge.
Whatever has gone wrong, the first question is usually which kind of job it is. If you cannot get in, or a broken lock means a door will not secure, that is an emergency and we come out at any hour. If the lock still works and the house is secure, it can normally wait for a planned appointment. This page is here to point you to the right answer quickly.
What Homeowners Actually Call Us About
Domestic work runs from urgent access problems through faulty locks to planned security improvements. Find the moment that matches yours below and follow the link to the page that covers it properly.

You are locked out
The door has swung shut behind you with the keys on the hall table, or the lock simply refuses to open. Most house lockouts are opened without damage, so the lock keeps working afterwards. We answer at any hour: see locked out or.

You have just moved in
Nobody can tell you how many copies of the old keys were cut or who is still holding them. Changing the external cylinders on moving day puts you back in control, and they can usually be keyed alike so one key works every door.
You have lost your keys
This is not the same as being locked out: the keys are now somewhere you do not know, and they may still open your front door. Replacing the affected lock or cylinder stops every missing key working at once. See lock replacement, or locked out if you are stuck outside now.

Something has stopped working
A key that sticks, a handle that will not lift, a door you have to shove before it locks. Get it looked at before it fails, and do not force the key or handle, because that tends to cause more damage. Often an adjustment fixes it: see lock repair or.

You have been broken into
If anyone could still be inside or you feel in danger, stay outside and call 999. Once the police say repairs can go ahead, we secure the doors, repair the damage and board up where a repair has to wait. See burglary repairs and.

You want the place more secure
No emergency, just a feeling that the locks are past it or the back door is weak. The usual starting point is the front door cylinder, working outward from there. See lock installation or lock replacement. For old or awkward window locks,.
A Door-by-Door Look at Your Home
A house is only as secure as its weakest opening, and that is rarely the front door. Walk round your own home with the four checks below and you will know where to start.
The front door
This is the door people think about, and normally the best protected. On a timber door, look at the faceplate on the edge for a British Standard mortice lock with a kitemark. On a uPVC or composite door, look at the face of the cylinder for a star or Diamond rating. Our guide to BS 3621 explains the marks; lock replacement and lock installation cover the work.
The back and patio doors
Usually the weakest point and the least considered, because nobody on the street can see them, which is precisely why they get used. Back, French and patio doors may use cylinders, multipoint mechanisms or other hardware, and older patio doors often still carry their original locks. If the handle is hard to lift, the locking points will not engage or the key fights you, the door or the mechanism needs attention: see lock repair or.
The windows
Some insurance policies specify key-operated locks on accessible windows, meaning ground floor and anything reachable from a flat roof, balcony or extension. Check that those windows shut properly and that the locks and keys are actually there, then compare what you have against your policy wording. Missing or broken window locks are common and inexpensive to put right:.
The garage, shed and side gate
These are the forgotten openings. A side gate that opens gives someone cover to work on the back of the house, and a shed or garage often holds valuable items plus the very tools that make forcing a door easier. Check the existing locks and latches still work and still suit the opening.
A Free Home Security Check
[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether a free security check is offered. If not, delete this section entirely.]
Security at home depends on more than the front door, and the openings people see least are the ones that get overlooked. A free check is a walk round those openings with you, testing that each door closes properly, each lock turns smoothly and each key works without force. Timber, uPVC and composite doors use different locking arrangements; BS 3621 is commonly relevant to qualifying key-operated lock assemblies on timber doors, while uPVC and composite doors often use different systems, so we check what is fitted against your insurer's requirements. You get:
- A walk round every door, window, gate and outbuilding lock
- A plain list of what meets current standards and what does not
- A price for anything worth doing, with no obligation
Nothing is fitted on the day unless you ask. Call 01928 611001 to arrange one.
What Homeowners Most Often Get Wrong
A lock can look strong and still be worn, unsuitable or mismatched to its door. These five misunderstandings are the ones we see most, and spotting them tells you when a check, repair or replacement is worth doing.
"It's a five-lever lock, so it meets the standard."
A five-lever lock is not automatically certified to BS 3621. Look for the British Standard number and certification mark, then compare the lock with your policy. See BS 3621 explained.
"It's just a bit stiff."
A stiff key, a heavy handle or a door that needs force to lock points to misalignment, wear or a mechanism starting to fail, and carrying on forcing it can leave the door unable to lock at all.
"The uPVC door won't lock, so I need a new door."
Almost never; the mechanism or alignment is usually the problem.
"I lost my keys, so I'll get a new one cut."
A new key solves nothing when the old ones still work.
"The safe is heavy enough without bolting down."
A safe that is not fixed down may not carry the rating it was bought for.
Renting, or Letting a Property Out?
Around 43% of Runcorn households rent their home: 14.6% from a private landlord and 28.6% from a social landlord, against 55.8% who own (Census 2021 TS054). If you rent, call your landlord or letting agent first where you can, because they often hold a spare key and may need to approve any change to the locks. If they cannot attend, we can open the door and will normally ask you to confirm you live there. See locked out.
Landlords and letting agents: lock changes between tenancies are routine and can be scheduled around a changeover date, and cylinders across several properties can be keyed alike where one person needs access to all of them. Our landlord and HMO services page covers this in full, and business premises are on the commercial locksmith page.
Locksmith pricing
What Does a Home Locksmith Cost?
There is no call-out charge, ever. A standard weekday lockout, Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm, starts from £70.80 including VAT (£59 plus VAT); that is a starting price for a straightforward job in normal hours, not a fixed price, and the final figure depends on the lock, the work and the time of the call. Every job is priced on the phone from your description, and if anything on site changes that price you hear about it before work begins. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.
Whether you own, rent or manage the property can change the next step, so tell us when you call. If the work is not urgent, describe the door, window or lock involved and we will point you to the right service. Our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn has the detail, and all our services are listed in one place.

What affects the cost?
Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.
Domestic Locksmith Services Across Runcorn
We work on homes across Runcorn, from privately rented houses around Dukesfield to the family semis and terraces found right across the town. The Runcorn built-up area had around 61,600 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS).
The housing stock here changes what is on the doors. Of 27,226 households, 35.7% live in terraced houses, 34.0% in semi-detached, 18.5% in detached houses and 11.6% in flats (Census 2021 TS044, 205 output areas on the Runcorn built-up-area boundary). Half the homes date from 1945 to 1982 (50.1%), with 8.8% built before 1900, 9.6% between 1900 and 1939, 19.9% between 1983 and 2008 and 11.4% from 2009 on (VOA CTSOP 4.1, 31 Mar 2026). In practice that means older timber doors with mortice locks turn up alongside the uPVC multipoint doors common on post-war and newer estates, so tell us the door type when you call and we can confirm what is likely to be fitted [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: technician view on local door types].
Halton, Higher Runcorn and Weston Village are conservation areas, and no Article 4 direction touching doors or windows is listed for the town (planning.data.gov.uk, Oct 2026; the national record has gaps). Conservation status can affect a replacement door, not the lock inside it.
We cover Runcorn's WA7 postcode district (ONSPD Feb 2026: 1,495 live postcodes across the Runcorn built-up area), including:
- Higher Runcorn, mostly houses
- Halton Lea
- Grange, mostly houses
- Dukesfield, with much private renting
- Halton Brook, mostly houses
- The Brow, mostly houses
The tendencies above come from Census 2021 output areas around each place, a catchment rather than an exact boundary. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas.]

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you come out at night for a house lockout?
Yes. Emergency calls are taken 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Most house lockouts are opened without damaging the lock, so your keys still work afterwards. Out-of-hours work is charged at a higher rate, the call-out is still free, and you hear the price first.
What is the difference between a domestic and a commercial locksmith?
Mostly the property and the hardware rather than the skill. Domestic work covers houses and flats, including access problems and the locks on doors and windows: front and back doors, patio doors, windows, garages and sheds. Shops, offices and other business premises fall under commercial work; their doors, hardware and access arrangements often differ from those used in homes.
Do I need to change the locks when I move house?
It is a sensible step. You cannot know how many keys were cut or who still holds one, including previous owners, trades and former tenants. Replacing the external cylinders retires every old key, and it is a good moment to check the existing locks for condition, suitability and any insurance requirement.
I rent. Should I call you or my landlord?
Your landlord or letting agent first, in most cases. A spare key is often available from them, and changing the locks may require their approval. If you cannot reach them, or they cannot attend, we can open the door, and we will normally ask you to confirm you live there.
Which part of my house is most likely to be the weak point?
Rarely the front door. Back doors, patio doors and ground floor windows often have the oldest hardware in the house, and they are out of sight from the street. Side gates matter too, because they give cover to anyone working on the back.
How can I tell if my locks meet my insurance policy?
On a timber door, look at the faceplate for a British Standard kitemark and number. On a uPVC or composite door, look at the face of the euro cylinder for a star rating or Diamond mark. If there is no marking, ask us to check it against your policy wording.
Do you fit burglar alarms or CCTV?
No [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: alarms and CCTV are not offered]. We are a locksmith, so we work on locks, doors, windows, safes and the hardware that secures them. Alarms and CCTV are a different trade.
Can you look at the whole house rather than just one door?
Yes, and it often makes more sense. Hardware of the same age tends to wear out together, so if one lock has failed the others may not be far behind. Looking at the openings together means one visit and one price.
