When a Business Cannot Open, Every Hour Counts

Runcorn Locksmith works on business premises across Runcorn, from a shop that will not open at eight in the morning to a lock change booked for after closing. Emergency calls are taken 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and there is no call-out charge. If you cannot get in right now, see emergency locksmith or call.

At home, a failed lock is a nuisance. On a shop, office or unit it halts trading: staff stand outside, deliveries go back on the van and customers meet a locked door. The work is often the same as on a house; the cost of every hour's delay is not, so these jobs are prioritised and scheduled around your trading rather than through it.

What Businesses Call Us About

Nearly every commercial call fits one of five situations. Before calling, follow the links under the situations below for a fuller explanation of the work involved.

01

Locked out of the premises

Nobody can open up, the only keyholder is not answering, or a key has snapped in the lock at opening time. Early morning is when this happens most, and we treat it as urgent. Entry can usually be gained without damaging the door, leaving the lock usable. See locked out or.

02

A member of staff has left with keys

Households rarely face this one. When keys go missing after someone leaves, the only way to be sure who can get in is to change the cylinders on every door they could open. The lock cases and handles normally stay, and the work can usually be booked outside trading hours.

03

The entrance door has failed

A shop entrance that will not lock, a handle that has worked loose, or a mechanism worn out by constant daily use. Often the door itself is fine and one component has failed, and it is frequently aluminium or commercial-grade uPVC rather than anything domestic. See lock repair or.

04

The premises have been broken into

Forced shutters, a damaged entrance, or a unit you cannot lock until the police have finished. Report it to Cheshire Constabulary on 101 or online at cheshire.police.uk, or 999 if anyone is in danger, and get a crime reference before you claim. We then secure the premises, repair what we can and board up where parts are needed. See burglary repairs and.

05

Insurance or a lease requires a lock upgrade

A commercial policy or lease clause naming a lock standard for the entrance. Once you know exactly what the document asks for, it is usually simple to meet, so read the wording before you buy anything. See lock installation or.

Why a Commercial Lock Is Not a Domestic Lock

The real difference is how hard the lock is worked. A front door at home might be opened a dozen times a day; a shop or office entrance can be opened several hundred. Cylinders, multipoint mechanisms and handles that last for years on a house wear out fast on a trading entrance, and the true cost is not the part. It is the repeat call-out and the disruption every time the door fails again.

Commercial entrances also take forms a home rarely has, and the hardware has to match:

  • Cylinders with a higher cycle life, built for constant use
  • Heavier-duty mechanisms, handles and door closers
  • Lock cases and cylinders suited to aluminium shopfront doors, which differ from uPVC or timber
  • Roller shutters and shutter locks protecting the frontage when you are closed

Tell us what the door is made of and what is currently fitted, because that shapes what is needed. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: item 17, whether commercial-grade hardware is stocked or sourced.] Get the specification wrong and you pay for it over and over; get it right and the door simply keeps working. For replacement work, see lock replacement.

Key Control When Staff Change

Keeping track of a handful of keys is far harder when they circulate among a dozen staff than within a family. Keys get lent, copied and not always returned, and every departure, contractor and lost key chips away at your certainty. You cannot be certain who still has access after a member of staff leaves on poor terms or fails to return their key.

Where keys are truly unaccounted for, a cylinder change on each affected door is the only fix, because it retires every existing key at once; an old key keeps working whoever holds it. It is usually quicker and cheaper than owners expect, since the lock case and handles stay put. Where several doors need to stay in step, the new cylinders can be keyed alike so one key opens the set. A simple written record of who holds which key costs nothing and stops the question coming up again. See lock replacement.

Premises We Work On

The same technicians cover commercial and domestic work, so a flat above a shop is one call, not two.

  • Shops and retail units, including shopfronts and shutters
  • Offices and professional premises
  • Pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants
  • Industrial units, workshops and storage
  • Schools, surgeries, salons and community buildings
  • Landlords and managing agents with commercial units to let

For homes, see residential locksmith; for rented housing, see landlord and HMO services.

Work Scheduled Around Your Trading Hours

Most owners would rather the locks were changed at six in the evening than at eleven in the morning with customers on the shop floor. Planned commercial jobs can take place when your premises are closed, as our cover runs 24 hours a day. A cylinder change, a new lock on the stockroom, or a replacement shutter lock can be booked before you open or after you close, so customers never see a locksmith at the door. That applies to planned jobs as much as emergencies. Be aware that work outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, is charged at the higher rate, so weigh that against the disruption of a daytime visit. Mention your trading pattern when you call and we will plan around it.

Fire Doors and Escape Routes

Business premises carry duties around escape routes that a home does not. A door on an escape route has to let people out without a key, which is normally achieved with keyless exit hardware on the inside, such as a thumbturn, push pad or panic bar, while the outside stays locked. BS 8621 is the British Standard for lock assemblies with keyless egress, and panic hardware has its own standards. What a particular building needs depends on its fire risk assessment and its use, so check that before changing anything on an escape route. We do not carry out fire risk assessments or advise on fire compliance; that is a separate profession. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether panic hardware is supplied or fitted.] See lock installation and our guide to BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks.

Invoicing and Paperwork

For a business, the paperwork matters almost as much as the lock. For your accounts department or an insurance claim, we provide an itemised VAT invoice recording the premises, the work completed and any hardware fitted. Where a business runs more than one property, work can be invoiced per job or per site. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: VAT registration status, itemised invoicing, and invoicing across multiple sites on one account.] Ask about the format you need when you call.

Locksmith pricing

What Does a Commercial Locksmith Cost?

We do not publish a commercial price, because the work varies too much from one entrance to the next. If you cannot open your premises, a door will not secure, or you are planning a repair, replacement or upgrade, call with the business postcode and a short description and we will price it on the call. The main factors are:

  • The door type, including whether it is aluminium or commercial-grade
  • The hardware specification the traffic demands
  • How many doors and entrances are involved
  • Whether the job is booked or urgent, and the time of day

There is no call-out charge at any hour, and if anything on site changes the price you are told before work starts. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether commercial rates differ from domestic, and whether a commercial starting price can be published.] For more, see our full guide to locksmith prices in Runcorn.

What affects the cost?

Service required, time of attendance, lock and door type, labour and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you come out before we open?

Yes; booking a visit before opening is often a practical choice. Because emergency cover runs around the clock, planned work can be booked before opening or after closing so it never happens in front of customers. Lockouts and failed entrances are treated as urgent whatever the hour. Work outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, is at the higher rate.

A member of staff has left and not returned their keys. What now?

Change the cylinders on every door they could open. That is the only way to be sure, because a mechanical key keeps working whoever holds it and cannot be switched off. Where several doors need one key, the new cylinders can be keyed alike.

Are commercial locks different from the ones on a house?

Mainly in how hard they are worked. Cylinders, handles and closers on a shop entrance are built to cope with heavier use: the door may open hundreds of times a day. Other differences concern the hardware required for shopfronts, shutters and escape doors, which has no domestic equivalent.

Do you work on aluminium shopfront doors?

Yes. Aluminium is used for many commercial entrances, with lock cases and cylinders that differ from those fitted to uPVC or timber doors. Tell us the door type when you call, because it changes both the parts and the time involved.

Our insurance says we need a particular lock standard. Can you help?

Yes. Check the exact entrance-door lock standard specified in your commercial policy or lease; these documents often include one, and satisfying it is usually straightforward once the requirement is clear. Send us the wording if you have it. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: commercial lock standards fitted.]

Can you do work across more than one of our sites?

Yes. We can arrange work at several premises for the same business, with invoicing organised to suit its accounts. Tell us how many properties are involved so the work can be planned [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: multi-site invoicing].

Will we get a proper invoice for our accounts?

Yes. An itemised invoice records which premises we worked on, what we did and any hardware we fitted, providing paperwork for your accounts and any applicable insurance claim. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: VAT status and invoice format.]

Our fire exit door needs a new lock. What do we need?

People must be able to leave through a door on an escape route without using a key, so the lock must allow this. The standard for keyless egress is BS 8621, which uses a thumbturn on the inside, and panic bars or push pads have their own standards. What your building needs depends on its fire risk assessment, so check that first, then see lock installation.
