Need a New Lock Fitted in Runcorn?
Runcorn Locksmith supplies and fits new locks on doors, windows, outbuildings and gates across Runcorn, including British Standard and high-security locks for insurance compliance, at a booked time that suits you. There is no call-out charge, and emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day.
People usually come to this page for one of four reasons: a door with no lock, or only one; an upgrade to meet an insurer's requirement; a new or replacement door that needs its locks fitted; or an internal room, office, outbuilding or gate that needs securing. When you call 01928 611001, describe the door and how it will be used, and mention any written requirements from your insurer, landlord or managing agent. If you are swapping an existing lock like for like, see lock replacement instead.
Fitting a New Lock or Replacing an Existing One?
The two jobs sound alike but differ in one way: installation creates a new locking position, adds another lock, upgrades to a different type or standard, or fits hardware to a new door, whereas replacement takes out a lock that is already there and puts a like-for-like one in its place. Before any lock goes in, the door and frame are checked to see which lock types and positions will work, because the specification turns on the door's material, thickness, construction and use. The whole door and lock arrangement matters, not only the lock.
When you need a lock fitted
- A door with no lock, or only a nightlatch where your insurer wants a deadlock as well.
- An upgrade to a British Standard or anti-snap lock.
- A new, replacement or newly hung door that needs a compatible lock, cylinder and handles.
- An internal room, office, outbuilding, shed or side gate that needs key-controlled access.
- A secondary lock on a patio or French door, where the door allows another locking point.
Call 01928 611001 to talk through the door.
When you need a lock replaced instead
- Your keys are lost or stolen.
- You have just moved in.
- The lock is worn, stiff or failing.
- The door has been forced.
Those are swaps rather than new fittings, and our lock replacement in Runcorn page covers them.
Does Your Lock Actually Meet Your Insurance Requirements?
Plenty of homeowners assume the locks already on their doors satisfy their policy, and some are wrong without realising it. The right lock depends on the door's construction, where it is, how it is used and how people need to get in and out, and a lock that suits one door may be wrong for another. Before choosing, look at whether the door is timber, uPVC, composite or aluminium, whether it is external or internal, and its thickness, frame and any existing preparation, and read any written instructions from an insurer, landlord or managing agent first.
A five-lever lock is not automatically a BS 3621 lock
Counting levers tells you nothing certain: the number of levers alone does not confirm that a lock meets BS 3621. Many generic five-lever mortice locks sold for DIY fitting carry no British Standard marking, and they are often inherited from a previous owner or a budget refit without anyone knowing. The check takes seconds: look at the faceplate on the edge of the door for the standard mark and the BS number. Without that marking, do not assume the lock meets the standard, however many levers it has. More in BS 3621 explained.
A cheap euro cylinder can be snapped in seconds
On uPVC and composite doors, a basic hardware-shop euro cylinder offers little resistance to snapping, a common way of attacking this type of door. Depending on the product, a better cylinder may carry a TS 007 star rating or an SS 312 Diamond rating, so look for the stars or the Diamond mark on the cylinder face. Read anti-snap locks and lock snapping explained, or see our uPVC door locks page.
Not sure what is on your doors? Call 01928 611001 and describe the markings.

BS 3621, BS 8621 and PAS 3621: Which Standard Applies to Your Door?
Each standard answers a different question about how a door is locked and how people leave. Some policies specify one of them, but there is no single standard every insurer follows: many of the largest UK insurers take guidance from RISCAuthority, yet each sets its own conditions, which is why two policies on similar houses can ask for different things. "Insurance approved" is shorthand; BSI certifies the standard, and your insurer decides what its policy requires, so check the policy wording.
| Standard | What it covers | Where it tends to matter |
|---|---|---|
| BS 3621 | A tested thief-resistant single-point lock, worked by a key from both sides | Commonly linked with suitable external timber doors |
| BS 8621 | A tested thief-resistant single-point lock, worked by a key from outside, with keyless exit from inside | May be relevant where people must be able to get out without a key, such as flats and other escape routes |
| PAS 3621 | The equivalent approach applied to multipoint locking systems | uPVC and composite doors with multipoint locks |
| TS 007 / SS 312 | Security ratings for cylinders and related door hardware | The rating needed depends on the door and any written requirement |
Fire doors, flat entrance doors and communal entrances add another layer. A lock fitted there has to suit the door's fire-safety and escape role, and must not stop it closing properly or weaken its resistance to fire and smoke. If the door belongs to a rented or leasehold property, a flat in a managed building, or a communal entrance or shared area, approval may be needed before anything is fitted. That matters here: flats make up 11.6% of Runcorn households, alongside terraced 35.7%, semi-detached 34.0% and detached 18.5% (Census 2021 TS044, 27,226 households). See BS 3621 and insurance-approved locks explained and types of door locks explained.
Locks We Fit on Runcorn Properties
What suits a door depends on its material, the fitting space available, how the lock is to be operated and any confirmed security requirement. Runcorn's housing gives a rough guide: 8.8% of homes predate 1900 and 9.6% date from 1900–39, while 50.1% were built in 1945–82, 19.9% in 1983–2008 and 11.4% since 2009 (VOA CTSOP 4.1, 31 Mar 2026). As a tendency, timber doors suited to mortice locks are likelier on the oldest houses and uPVC or composite doors on later stock, though many doors have been changed since. Before fitting a lock, we always examine the door's thickness and construction, assess the frame and check the fitting position. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: lock brands carried]
Mortice deadlocks
Set into the edge of a suitable timber door, available as deadlocks or sashlocks, with certified versions where a recognised standard is needed. A five-lever BS 3621 deadlock is what many insurers look for on a timber final-exit door. Fitting one where none exists means cutting a mortice pocket into the door, which is skilled work rather than a DIY job. See BS 3621 explained.
Euro cylinders and anti-snap upgrades
Euro cylinders work inside compatible lock cases and multipoint systems on uPVC, composite and some aluminium or timber doors, with different security ratings available. Moving up to a TS 007 3-star or SS 312 Diamond cylinder is one of the quickest security improvements, and is often what an insurer wants. The cylinder must be sized correctly and match the surrounding hardware, because one that sticks out too far is itself a weakness.
Nightlatches and rim locks
These mount on the inside surface of suitable doors and are often called a "Yale lock" in everyday speech. Models differ in how they lock, open and deadlock. Whether one works as the main lock or an extra lock depends on the door, the product and its use; on its own, a nightlatch rarely satisfies an insurer on a final-exit door, so a mortice deadlock is often fitted alongside it.
Internal, outbuilding and gate locks
Locks for bedrooms in shared houses, offices, stockrooms and storage areas, chosen by who needs access and how often the door is used, plus sheds, garages, outbuildings and side gates. Side gates and outbuildings can lead to a hidden rear door, so they are worth securing even though insurers seldom mention them.
Window locks
Some policies specify key-operated locks on accessible windows, particularly on the ground floor. Window locks have their own page: window lock repair and replacement.

Proof of What We Fitted, for Your Insurer
After a break-in, an insurer may ask which locks were fitted and whether they met the policy, and a verbal assurance is not evidence. A written record also helps later with maintenance and replacement parts. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: that an itemised invoice naming lock and standard can be provided as standard.] Once confirmed, each installation would come with:
Lock details
the lock, cylinder or hardware fitted, and the standard it meets.
Installation record
which doors it was fitted to, set out on the invoice or job record.
Ratings
a note of the rating wherever a cylinder carries one.
Keep it with your policy documents. If you need particular product details recorded, mention it when you call 01928 611001.

What Affects the Cost of Fitting a New Lock
An installation is priced on the lock chosen, the door and the preparation it needs. Fitting a lock into a door with no existing provision takes longer than swapping one, because the door has to be prepared first. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether an installation starting price can be published.] The factors are:
There is never a call-out charge. You get a price on the call from what you describe, and anything on site that alters it is explained before work begins. You pay for the work carried out, any parts needed, and VAT. Rates outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, are higher, but the call-out itself is never charged.

How the Job Works
- Tell us the door type and what you want to achieve, including anything your insurer, landlord or managing agent has asked for in writing.
- We confirm which lock suits the door and the requirement, and give you a price.
- A technician [PROVIDER PACK: DBS and insurance evidence] prepares the door where needed, fits the lock, and tests it through a full cycle with the door open and then closed.
- You receive the keys and a record of what was fitted. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: record format]
Installation begins only once we have confirmed the final specification, what work has been agreed and the price. Testing with the door both open and closed is deliberate: it catches an alignment fault that would otherwise strain a brand-new lock. Questions first? Use our contact us page.
Lock Fitting Across Runcorn
We fit locks for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and business premises across Runcorn, on booked visits that can include a look at whether your existing locks match what your policy asks for. Appointments reach Grange and Halton Lea, The Brow and Higher Runcorn, Dukesfield and Halton Brook, throughout the WA7 postcode district (ONSPD Feb 2026), with availability depending on the address, the door and the work. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: genuine coverage areas]
Higher Runcorn, Grange, Halton Brook and The Brow are mostly houses, where installations tend to mean adding a deadlock or upgrading cylinders on front and back doors. Dukesfield has much private renting, so landlords there may want internal room locks or written approval checked before work. Parts of Halton, Higher Runcorn and Weston Village lie in conservation areas (four records on planning.data.gov.uk, October 2026, no Article 4 direction on doors or windows found); that affects changing a door, not fitting a lock to it. The built-up area had around 61,600 usual residents at the 2021 Census (ONS). Send your postcode to 01928 611001 to check.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my lock meets my insurance policy?
Check the faceplate on the edge of the door for a British Standard mark and BS number, or, on a uPVC or composite door, the cylinder face for a star rating or Diamond mark. If there is no marking, do not assume it complies. Then compare it with your policy wording, since requirements differ between insurers.
I have a five-lever lock. Is that enough?
Not necessarily. Five levers do not by themselves make a BS 3621 lock. Many generic five-lever mortice locks carry no standard marking, so check the faceplate rather than relying on the description.
Can you fit a lock to a door that does not have one?
Usually, as long as the door and frame suit the lock proposed. The door's material, thickness, fitting position and use are considered first, and preparing the door, such as cutting a mortice pocket or boring for a cylinder, takes longer than swapping a lock. We may need to inspect the door before settling on the final specification.
What is the difference between BS 3621 and BS 8621?
BS 3621 covers thief-resistant single-point locks worked by a key from both sides. BS 8621 covers thief-resistant single-point locks worked by a key from outside, with keyless exit from inside, which matters on escape routes such as flats. PAS 3621 applies the equivalent approach to multipoint locks.
Why do different insurers ask for different locks?
No single standard binds every insurer. Many large UK insurers take guidance from RISCAuthority, but each writes its own conditions, so two similar houses can face different requirements. Always read your own policy.
Will you give me proof of what was fitted?
[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: itemised invoice naming lock and standard.] Once confirmed, the invoice would name the lock, the standard it meets and the doors it went on. Keep it with your policy documents in case you ever need to claim.
Should I buy the lock myself and just pay you to fit it?
You can ask, and it will be checked for compatibility with the door first. Bear in mind that some shop-bought locks turn out not to carry the standard marking a policy asks for. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: policy on fitting customer-supplied locks and guarantees]
My house is in a conservation area. Can I still have new locks fitted?
Generally, yes. Conservation status tends to affect replacing the door itself rather than the lock fitted to it, and no Article 4 direction on doors or windows was found for Runcorn. Check with the council before changing the door.
Is there a 24-hour locksmith in Runcorn if a door cannot be secured?
Yes. Emergency calls are taken 24 hours a day, every day, including nights, weekends and bank holidays, with no call-out charge; work outside Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm, is at a higher labour rate.
How much does it cost to have a new lock fitted in Runcorn?
It depends on whether the door is already prepared or needs cutting, the lock type and rating, the door material, how many doors and the time of day. A door with no existing provision takes longer. There is no call-out charge, and you get a price on the call.
